Hi!

Many of my users are running IMAP on outlook express, simply becuse they dont want, need or know how to use Outlook, and it is a lot cheaper.

But all of them complain about that deleted mails infact gets deleted.. doh.

I just wanted to start a thread here and maybe have some ideas or comments on how to solve this.

In my world outlook express could talk rdp.. but thats my world.. ;-)

Can I use IMAP and still have deleted mails saved somehow?

Hi, how about turning on allow deleted items recovery in the general preferences for your domain?

I believe that by default, most popular IMAP clients use a "move the message to the trash folder" method for deleting mail. The user can then recover the deleted message from the trash folder, or delete it from the trash folder which will permanently delete the message.

Outlook Express uses the "Deleted Items" folder for such activity. Thunderbird & it's cousins from the Mozilla project use the "Trash" folder. I don't know for sure about The Bat, Eudora, or others.

Permanent message deletion is not usually the default setting, but can be over-ridden in the user's mail account settings.

Make sure you have a policy in place to make users occasionally check these folders and empty them. The "Sent Items" folder is another one that needs periodic housekeeping.

Good is better than evil because it's nicer

hi!

Wow! The "alow deleted items recovery" was a feature I completely missed. I must check more what new versions bring, dont know for how long this one has been there.. maybe forever.. :-o

Anyway, that works just great. Using IMAP is now no problem. :-)

Thanks!
