Hi,

Does anyone know which is better NAT or Proxy Server? What are the differences? Is one more secure than the other? Which one would you recommend for a small network with one server and several clients?

Thanks
Ollie

When you use NAT, winroute is already filtering traffic through the transparent proxy. This is the recommended method.

The non-transparent proxy should be used only in the following circumstances:
-WinRoute is not the default gateway
-Clients connect from a Terminal Server and you want to be able to separately authenticate each user that is connecting from the terminal server.

Otherwise the non-transparent proxy is slower and may not work with some authentication based websites.

But there is also a good use of proxy:

The "Cache"
This could speed up surfing and save precious bandwidth. Say, station 1 went to CNN.com, images there were saved in proxy server... so when station 2,3,4,5.... went to the same site, instead of downloading it again from CNN site, proxy server will validate those files(depending on your settings) and transferred the requested images locally.
