I just installed the newest version of Kerio on an XP SP1 machine. Everything seems to work fine except that Kerio will not answer on port 25 from anywhere other that the Kerio server itself. Any ideas? Sending mail works fine.

And NO, it is not a firewall issue due to the fact that it will not answer from PC's that are internal to the network.

Make sure the XP firewall (or third party firewall if you have one) has an exception for port 25, or is off entirely. It can still be a firewall issue even though they're network computers as the XP firewall, and most others, don't automatically add exceptions for network IPs... especially for things like SMTP inbound.

Make sure the SMTP service is set to listen on all addresses, and not just the loopback.

Another possibility, though less likely, is that something else on the machine is bound to the machine's IP address on 25 and Kerio is only listening on the loopback. From a command line, type 'netstat -ano | find ":25"'. If anything with a PID other than Kerio's shows up as listening, that's the issue.

Also check your AV settings if running AV on your KMS server. I ran into this recently with the current McAfee "Total Protection" package. It blocked all SMTP connections.

Good luck.

This is a fresh install of XP. It has no AV, other than that included with Kerio. SMTP is listening on all interfaces. Still can't figure this out. Tried turning of AV and Spam protection, but that didn't help.

How are you trying to connect from the other machines - via a FQDN, NetBIOS name, IP address? Can you ping the KMS machine from the client you're connecting from?

Yes, I can ping it. I've tried FQDN and IP address. Still no go. This can't be too hard, I just installed it last night and didn't change any advanced settings.

XP comes with a basic firewall that blocks more or less all inbound connections, even from your own local network. So for testing, try to switch the firewall off. If that solves the problem you can add an inbound "Allow" exception for port 25.

Have you turned Spam Repellent on within KMS? This delays the connection for 25 seconds (if set to standard). Try to switch that off for testing.

Also did you try to telnet on port 25? Do you get a prompt?

And not being able to telnet to port 25 is what this thread is all about.

Do you have Spam Repellent switched on within the KMS Config? If so, switch it off for testing.

Spam Repellent would still show connections in the debug log. I'm assuming SMTP logging is on and no inbound connections are even showing.

Do POP or IMAP connections manage to connect to the server?

I have no spam filtering turned on at all. Spam Repellent is not on.

sedell: You are correct. POP3 and IMAP do in fact work. I can telnet to them without any issues. Every service seems to work with the exception of SMTP.

Try setting up KMS to accept SMTP on an additional alternate port, and configure the client the same. I'm wondering if something on your network is blocking port 25 as a security measure.
