I'm kind of a jack of all trades at my company, so my IT knowledge is limited - so please bear with me.

We use the Postini/Google spam filtering service. So all incoming traffic that we want is routed through their block of IP addresses. Of course some spammers are able to bypass Postini and go straight to our mail server, so I'd like to cut off that access.

I know I can go into Config > Services > SMTP > Access and allow access from only the IP groups I want, but I'm concerned about remote users needing to relay messages.

Who exactly would be affected by this? Webmail users? Mobile connections over IMAP? Mobile connections over "Exchange" ActiveSync?

And how do limit SMTP access will still allowing them to send messages?

Would dropping our local mail server's hostname from the MX records help with this? If some mobile devices were setup to connect to the local mail server's host name, and we dropped it from the record, would that make them stop working?

Thanks
