What is the difference or benefit of using "Aliases" found in Domain settings vs creating that alias as an additional mail address against an individual user?

E.g. I have domain called "test.com". I have 2 users, Bob & Jim. I decide I want an additional email account called "finance" to be received by Jim. I could either

1) Create an Alias of finance<_a.t_>test.com & forward it to Jim OR
2) I could go to the mail addresses tab in Jims account & add finance<_a.t_>test.com & he will receive it that way also. OR
3) I could set up a group with the email address of finance<_a.t_>test.com & forward it to Jim or more users.

So what is the advantage of creating an alias?

1) With Aliases, you can use wildcards (e.g. *) to match several addresses.

2) In the mail addresses tab you can add one or more addresses for the same user (no wildcards). The user can then choose as which address he wants to Send As.

3) Group: If more than one user needs access to the address (e.g. finance) this makes most sense.

Freakinvibe, thanks for the advice. Can you give me an example of how the wildcard could be used regarding aliases?

I normally just put in a "*" which results in a "catch-all" function. That means all the mails directed to your domain with an unknown recipient go to a specifc user (e.g. unknown-recipients<_a.t_>yourdomain.tld).
