When I start the mail-server, my Symantec Endpoint Protection notification goes off saying that it has found and deleted the Eicar.tmp virus. After it has been cleaned, the built in McAfee does not start either.

I have searched this forum and google to see that eicar is a "test" virus.

Now here is the dilemma at hand:
If I do not exclude the file, the built in McAfee does not run properly.
If I exclude the eicar file, who is to say that someone will not name a real virus Eicar and unleash it to do real harm?

Viruses are not detected by name but by the content of the file. Eicar is a testing file for all antiviruses (try Google for more details).
Server message store directory must be excluded from real-time scanning because the antivirus may break the consistency of the store. All incoming messages are scanned through AV in the Kerio Connect so there is no risk.
