We noticed that as of today the warning log is getting filled with 'too many connections' warnings. They are coming from several different machines on the network.

[02/Sep/2010 08:49:39] Connection attempt to service HTTP from IP address 172.16.1.151 rejected: too many connections. Connection limit is 1000.

What could be the cause of this? Virus?

The link you posted deals with IMAP connections. The problem here are HTTP connections.

In the Admin Console go to Status > Connections and see which IP addresses are connecting. If it's internal addresses, some PCs might have been infected with a virus. Run a AV scan on all the PCs with the IP addresses that hammer your mail server.

The IP's are always internal and seemingly always the same 6 machines or so. My first thought was virus but all of the machines checked out as clean.

Odd thing is, I'm not getting this now. It appears to have stopped as mysteriously as it started.....

Yesterday and now today i got the same problem again.
HTTPS get filled with hundreds of connections from ActiveSync, restart of the HTTPS Service and it works again.

If you're using iPhone, please note that using of multiple Exchange accounts on the same device is not supported yet.

Is this what's causing the connections problem?
I just removed the third and second account from my phone so hopefully this is now fixed. If not, then what else should I check for?

Restarting the service for HTTPS helps for just about four hours here on my server, even after increasing the limit to 200 connections.

(Would be nice to have a chart over HTTPS also. In 7.1.1 there are Traffic Charts for many thing but sadly not for HTTPS.)

I hope that the today release with the bugfix:
Quote:
- Using two ActiveSync accounts on the iPhone could break Push notifications.

will fix that problem with not closed ActiveSync connections!
