I have a customer who, for about a week now, is receiving SMTP timeouts when trying to connect to our Kerio Connect 7.1.1 server. I have not made any changes to our server. I tried three different online SMTP server tests. Only one passed the other two failed with messages such as

Resolving hostname...
Connecting...
SMTP -> FROM SERVER:
SMTP -> FROM SERVER:
SMTP -> ERROR: EHLO not accepted from server:
SMTP -> FROM SERVER:
SMTP -> ERROR: HELO not accepted from server:
Message sending failed.

and

Timeout occurred due to inactivity.
10/21/2010 4:56:51 PM Connection attempt #1 timed out after [16.22 sec].

When I look at the activity monitor on Kerio Connect, I can see the SMTP connections. I don't understand why they are erroring out? Is there something on my end I should be looking for?

We also have a lot of time outs (or better, large hick-ups) on SMTP and HTTP, all users outside our office, since upgrading to 7.1.1 it is more then before.
I tried to disable virus scanner as test, but no better result, a tried several things but no good solution yet.

But to the timeouts of the mxtoolbox.com , i also got this when the spam repellent "delay smtp greeting by" setting is more as 15sec.

My spam repellent is set to 10 seconds. Even when I turned it off I got the timeouts with mxtoolbox.com. Have you submitted a ticket to tech support yet? I'm thinking of doing that.

Try enabling SMTP logging in Debug mode. Then try to connect and see if the logs are a little bit more helpful.

Basically, I have disabled Spam Repellent. I don't like doing this, but since the SMTP response from the latest version of Kerio Connect has slowed down significantly, that is the only way I can ensure an SMTP timeout is not occurring with client email servers. It is extremely important that our clients always be able to get in touch with us. Hopefully, I will not see a significant spike in spam getting through.

First of all, the test is wrong. SMTP client MUST wait for initial SMTP greeting for at least 5 minutes. Second, as you can see in the log the SMTP server is sending correct response to both HELO and EHLO commands. But the test is reporting it as "failed":

Quote:

Resolving hostname...
Connecting...
SMTP -> FROM SERVER:
SMTP -> FROM SERVER:
SMTP -> ERROR: EHLO not accepted from server:
SMTP -> FROM SERVER:
SMTP -> ERROR: HELO not accepted from server:

[22/Oct/2010 11:41:23][110701568] {smtps} Task 1849 handler END

I recommend checking firewall or ISP because it seems the problem is there.
