We have been using Entourage 2008 and Outlook 2007 for years with about 70 users. All accounts are POP, with just a few IMAP. Around March/april next year, we are going to upgrade our mail server hardware. At that point, I'd like to move to Exchange Accounts.

Do you think using webmail 100% of the time instead of Macintosh Outlook 2011 or Windows Outlook 2007 or 2010 is a good move? Pros? Cons?

Syncing issues with iPhones and BB phones is a concern with just webmail. I think webmail would be just fine for everyone except for syncing up with the phones. I know an iPhone and BB can be set up with an Exchange Account, which may work perfectly. I'm just doing research now.

Bob,

"it depends" on your users. Using webmail will certainly keep costs down if you didn't already own Outlook/Entourage. If you have some creative people, you can skin webmail but I've never tried it myself.

How is your migration coming along? Give me a call sometime

Disadvantages of Webmail are:

  • Can't use it when offline (e.g. on notebook in train or plane)
  • Less interaction with desktop (e.g. drag/drop attachment from file folder to mail)
  • No plugin support (e.g. PDF plugin into Outlook)
  • Less possibilities of customization of look-n-feel (e.g. sort order/column width etc.)

First, I would let a set of pilot users work with webmail only. Use their feedback to decide if you want to go that way.

Regarding Blackberry support: If you use the free Blackberry Enterprise Server Express, your Blackberries will synchronize directly from the Kerio Server over-the-air, no Outlook needed. The Blackberry Enterprise Server Express only works on Windows Servers, though. You haven't indicated what your server OS is.

I am using a Mac now with the latest KC. Based on the replies, I will stay with Entourage and Outlook. The users are familiar with these apps. Thanks for the info.
