What I am not sure is what is the relation between a .key and a .cer file, I have a .cer file from a wild domain certificate, but not sure what I can do to make it work for the Kerio web mail.

The .key file(s) are only used when you generate the certificate request (or the certificate in case you use a self-signed certificate). Keyfiles are the actual encryption keys. Once you have the certificate itself - the .cer file - you must import it into Kerio Connect. It's explained in the admin manual: http://manuals.kerio.com/connect/adminguide/en/sect-kmscert. html

Keep the .key file(s) safe. They should not be reachable from the internet or be readable by anyone but administrator or root.
