We're using Kerio Connect 7.1.2 on Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2.

We're experiencing regular Kerio backup failures on different target backup drives due to "Cannot write file" errors in different user mail folders.

Current Backup Failure to Local USB Drive -

Our first full Kerio backup to a new external USB drive E: (connected to our mail server) started OK at the scheduled time of 22/Jul/2011 19:00:00. I monitored it last night for a few hours, and several 2 GB PART files were successfully created in the new E:\mail\kerio\backup/F20110723T010002Z ZIP file archive.

Checking things this morning, I found that the full backup failed at 23/Jul/2011 02:21:52 due to the "Cannot write file" entry shown in the ERROR log excerpt below. All of the 2 GB .PART files created for the E:\mail\kerio\backup/F20110723T010002Z ZIP file archive during this time disappeared after the backup failure (although our DEBUG log indicates that 16 volumes were created: see below).

Here are the relevant Kerio Connect 7 Admin Console ERROR log entries:

[23/Jul/2011 02:21:50] backup.cpp: Cannot write file D:\kms_store_new/mail/company.com/davidj/Tasks/properties.fl d to backup ZIP file E:\mail\kerio\backup/F20110723T010002Z
[23/Jul/2011 02:21:52] backup.cpp: BACKUP: Backup failed in folder ~davidj<_at_>company.com/Tasks, 271660 MB of 0 MB free on destination disk

Here are additional DEBUG log entries relevant to the current backup failure at 23/Jul/2011 02:21:52:

Past Backup Failures to Network NAS Drive -

We've had several similar failures in the last few weeks backing up to a network NAS drive. Thinking that the NAS drive might be failing (it had a few SMART allocation errors), I switched to the local USB drive noted above, but with the same negative results.

Below are some ERROR log examples of previous similar backup failures to the NAS drive, which are also due to "Cannot write file" errors in different users' mail folders:

All suggestions welcome.

Sounds like you have a filesystem that's corrupted or bad hardware.

Update -- Although the initial full scheduled backup that I tried to run on on Fri, 22/Jul/2011 19:00:00 to the USB drive's E:\mail\kerio\backup folder failed, incremental backups ran successfully to the E:\mail\kerio\backup folder on Sat, 23 Jul 2011 19:00:07 and Sun, 24 Jul 2011 19:00:01.

Here are the email notifications I received Sat and Sun night:

I'm also now seeing four Incremental ZIP files in the E:\mail\kerio\backup folder:

I20110725T010001Z.zip, Date Created: July 24, 2011, 7:00:01 PM
I20110725T010001Z.1.zip, Date Created: July 24, 2011, 7:37:36 PM
I20110725T010001Z.2.zip, Date Created: July 24, 2011, 8:04:11 PM
I20110725T010001Z.3.zip, Date Created: July 24, 2011, 8:46:14 PM

This is better than nothing, but doesn't there need to be a full backup in place for the incremental backups to build on?

Update -

As noted in my previous messages, I switched from our old network NAS backup device (very slow, with possible SMART disk errors) to an external USB 2.0 drive (with a 3.5" hard disk) connected directly to our Mail server. I still had Kerio backup failures, so I ran CHKDSK /F scan on the external USB drive that found many apparent disk errors.

Several days ago, I switched to an external Sans Digital USB 2.0 removable hard drive enclosure with identical 1.5TB SATA hard disks. Since then, I've run a couple of full Kerio backups and several differential backups to the removable disk without any problems or errors.
