Hi,

we are running Kerio Connect on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. For informations about new security patches, we've installed apticron.

The message from that server will be rejected from Kerio Connect with the message:
[01/Dec/2011 08:13:46] Message from IP address 127.0.0.1, sender <postmaster@kerio-ubuntu> temporarily rejected: sender domain does not resolve

The hostname seems correct:
root@kerio-ubuntu:/usr/sbin# hostname --fqdn
kerio.companydomain.de

root@kerio-ubuntu:/usr/sbin# hostname -a
kerio-ubuntu

The default sendmail process was replaced by the sendmail process (/opt/kerio/mailserver/sendmail) from kerio as described in article 'On Linux, how can I get PHP's mail() command to work with Kerio MailServer? '

How to set the correct sender domain ?

I guess domain "kerio-ubuntu" is not defined in your DNS server.

There are two possible ways:
1. Use real sender address in your messages, e.g. admin@yourdomain.tld, not generated postmaster<_at_>kerio-ubuntu. E.g. system command "mail" or PHP function mail() have parameters "-r"
You must probably update source code of your application - I don't know how are sent messages from your application.

2.
Web administration -> SMTP Server -> tab "Security Options" -> disable option "Block if sender's mail domain was not found in DNS"
But it doesn't solve DSN notifications to nonexisting user "postmaster@kerio-ubuntu" and opens your SMTP server to spammers' generated fake e-mail addresses.

Hi Radek,

DNS resolution is ok. The following test was done on the kerio server.
root@kerio-ubuntu:/tmp# nslookup
> kerio-ubuntu
Server: 192.168.76.23
Address: 192.168.76.23#53

Name: kerio-ubuntu.companydomain.dom
Address: 192.168.76.30
>

and
root@kerio-ubuntu:/tmp# host -a kerio-ubuntu
Trying "kerio-ubuntu.heliosvs.dom"

;; ANSWER SECTION:
kerio-ubuntu.companydomain.dom. 3600 IN A 192.168.76.30

The apticron version in ubuntu 10.04 is 1.1.39.
Since the new version 1.1.51, a new parameter was added:
* Add new config option CUSTOM_FROM which allows setting a custom sender by
replacing the default 'From:' in the notification emails. (Closes: #632743)

But this version wasn't available in ubuntu 10.04.

There are no security risk to disable the option "Block if sender's mail domain was not found in DNS"
because we use a mail security appliance for blocking spam mails.

Hi,

a made an update of the packages tar, dpkg and then apticron. Now the new parameter CUSTOM_FROM was available.
#
# Set CUSTOM_FROM if you want to replace the default sender by changing the
# 'From:' field used in the notification e-mails. Your default sender will
# be something like root<_at_>companydomain.de.
#
CUSTOM_FROM=

I've started apticron manually and I got the notification of new security updates.
