IPv6 - Baby steps
The doomsayers have been predicting the end of IPv4 for years, but so far IPgeddon has been a no show. While no new IPv4 addresses can be created, there still a fairly large pool of addresses available in the hands of ISPs. Nevertheless, there are good reasons to begin embracing IPv6. The growth of cloud computing has created a fresh demand for IP addresses on remotely hosted virtual servers, for example, and many countries outside the US (like China) have deployed IPv6 extensively. It is always a good idea to begin testing technology that you will eventually have to support.

For Kerio, IPv6 support is a work in progress. Our first available IPv6 was feature the ability to block IPv6 traffic in our UTM product; perhaps not the most complimentary beginning of investment in the technology, but a necessary step in the learning process. With all ISPs offering IPv6 and most desktops supporting it, new websites started springing up that could completely bypass IPv4-only firewall defenses (apparently many new porn sites are using IPv6). Simple blocking is a fairly blunt tool though, so our next step is the addition of a fully stateful IPv6 firewall, available in the current beta of Kerio Control 7.3. This will allow those interested in expanding the use or testing of IPv6 to do so securely.
