Under the Directory Service Tab, the Host Name entry, does it make any difference on whether you enter your servers FQDN or LocalHost or IP address? Will one type of entry give you a faster resolution over another? Will it provide any type of improvement to have one entry type over another.

If DNS is down, having "LocalHost" or the "IP" will allow it to work, but are there any other benefits of one over another?

Just curios, thanks for your time.

Is this Windows/AD? If so ...

If DNS is down, not being able to look up stuff in the directory service will probably be the least of your worries. Also, if you're talking about the DNS installation which MUST accompany a normal domain controller, AD won't work without it anyway. If you're talking about the DNS server which resolves forwarded queries from the domain controller's DNS, it won't necessarily be queried when you look up a host on the local domain. If both are down, everything will come to a complete standstill across the whole local network.

We use host names everywhere since name resolvers in absolutely every OS out there do their own caching. Resolution speed differences on IP vs hostnames are negligible in the grand scheme of things, and making survival strategies for dead name servers could - if one is polite - at best be ... err ... interesting Wink

Just my two cents.
