Hi all,

I've inherited administration of Kerio Connect 7.4.3 build 7813, with Sophos integration, running on OS X 10.8.2.

In the Services section of the web administration, I see that the SMTP Submission process, ordinarily listening on port 587 is stopped, and that the SMTP process is instead configured to listen on both 25 and 587.

I'm not sure I understand the difference between the two services -- what would be the logic for the change above, what would it accomplish?

Thanks for any insight.

Submission requires authentication. It's useful when traveling somewhere and you need your home server to relay your mail. See the Wikipedia "Simple Mail Transfer Protocol" entry and the "Services" chapter in the Admin guide or http://kb.kerio.com/article/services-in-kerio-connect-1153.h tml for explanation.

I don't know why someone would change that..

Some versions ago, Kerio Connect didn't have the extra submission service and to get the functionality, you had to assign port 25 and 587 to the SMTP service.

So I guess your config has been taken over by an upgrade from a previous version.

I would remove the 587 port from the SMTP service and enable the submission service.

You're right, this config is an upgrade from a previous version.

This server's SMTP service is configured to require authentication when sending, so I imagine I can remove 587 from the SMTP and enable the Submission service without anyone noticing. I'll do that at some quiet hour.

Thank you both for the explanations.

Yes, but you should enable submission if you have people who aren't using KOC or Webmail and need to relay through the server when traveling or if at home and their ISP blocks port 25 (very common today).

Got it. One of the large ISPs here now blocks port 25 on all residential service, so I do have traffic coming in over 587. I'll make sure I keep listening there.
