We are experiencing a weirdness with network traffic that started right around iOS 6.1 being released. We have multiple Kerio Connect 8 hosted servers in our datacenter and starting this past week our network traffic has been roughly 500% of normal usage. Nothing has changed other than iOS 6.1 came out. We've monitored all of the usual suspects and even packet captures show so many different IP's that we can't help but suspect smartphones.

We had one event where a server had 100 activesync connections for each user on average. I could not even restart the kerio process, having to resort to rebooting the server itself to bring kerio back online. It lasted about 12 hours before succumbing again to connection overload. That was 2 days ago and it hasn't happened since. We still have the massive network load happening however.

Servers are all virtualized with plenty of ram, cpu, and are hosted on a fast SAN with lots of 10K drives.

Has anybody seen this on their setups or in their environments?

Thanks for the heads up. So far I don't see any difference on Kerio Connect 7.43 servers.

GlennK,

We've narrowed down the majority of the traffic to a single client at a single location. We're working with them to figure out what is going on but nothing concrete yet. They don't have an IT person in house so I'm not sure what we can do for them across the country. They did say they updated a bunch of devices to iOS 6.1 so it could be the issue.

Check out this link:

I'm not nuts, we ARE seeing a ton of traffic and server load due to this.

That's not good! It doesn't seem like there is a good way to block access based on whether a user has 6.1 or not either. Let me know if you discover one.

They could re-set up their phones using the Setup via Webmail and that would use IMAP/CalDAV/CardDAV. The support on that would be a nightmare, we have a TON of hosted clients and emailing them all will not be easy.

I hope 6.1.1 comes out asap and fixes this issue.

I have seen some high cpu usage the last few days , wonder if this could be related, not seeing any unusual log entries on the server related to ActiveSync though.

Rrisdal, check your connections and see how many there are. I think that's what causes the problem.

I don't think it does, but we just had a customer with 35 seats take down their Kerio Connect 8 server with 50 iDevices this morning. Mac Mini Server with Thunderbolt array running Connect 8.0. 500 emails stuck in queue and server gave up trying to deliver them. Rebooting the server took 20 minutes until it was back up. Then email started flowing again.

I sent an email out to our biggest offenders asking them to update asap. I'll check the server loads today and see if there's any difference.

Did you see the release notes for Connect 8.01? Could Connect 8 + CardDAV be the problem?

"This version fixes continuous full CPU load and CardDAV database growth to over hundreds
of megabytes on Kerio Connect server. This may happen when using Apple Address Book
CardDAV account which is writing large amount of duplicate records to server."

It goes on to detail instructions for fixing/upgrading.
