Hi All

History

We recently had an issue with a user setting up a rule in the mail box to forward on a message with a subject text line to another users inbox. However this user was out of the office & it resulted in the email being bounced back with an out of office reply & then the joy of an infinite loop happend resulting in 52K emails being sent between two mail boxes.
Thankfully I had a limit to the disk space which slowed things down & I was able to remove the rule & kill the message que.

To avoid this in the future I would like to limit the number emails that a user can send in an hour to about 100-200

I was wondering if there is the ability to limit the number of emails sent by a user per hour / per day?

I have been able to limit the size of the emails being sent but by a use but cant seem to see this.

Also if you have any suggestions that might help stop this happening in the future that would be great

Thanks a million

Hi,

If you're using the unmodified "out of office" option built into Kerio (accessible either in webmail, or any email client) this should only send one email per week. If your system is doing something different to this, it would be worth getting Support directly involved so that they can look at your rules (the filter.siv file for the user) and see if there is something strange going on.

Additionally, there are some debugging options you could use to watch what is happening as the message bounces around.

Hi Lisa

Thanks for getting back to me on this. Unfortunately it looks like there could be a bit of a bug if thats the case.
What happened was each email that was sent ended up being treated as a "new" message as the title would have changed to FW:FW:Subject.

This email in turn got bounced back to the sender by the rule that was checking for the word "Subject" in the Subject line & then another FW: was added to the message eg FW:FW:FW:Subject & around & around it went Smile

If this is the case should the Kerio out of office option picked up the fact that this was the same email?

What happend then was eventually both the sender & receivers email boxes ended up getting full & then the default Kerio "Your email account has reached its limit" email was added to the fray! A very fun morning.

Eventually managed to get things under control by clearing the que from the main Kerio install directory.

So if there is a known way to limit the number of emails being sent per day per user

Cheers

Tim

The out-of-office mail should be sent once per week and sender, so a loop like that should not happen. Do you have mail logs of the incident?

Hi Clan

Can you advise how i would go about changing this? When the user logs into to set there out of office there is no ability to set the limit that I can see. Only a piece of text at the bottom of the pop up screen that says
"Will be sent one to each user"

Regarding the Mail log here is just a sample of the operations que log I have only posted a segment as the log itself would take up several pages

If the email subject contains "Fwd:" then it is not about Out of office replies. You probably have some forwarding rule there so you need to sort it out.

Hi Pavel

Thanks for getting back to me on this. However I think people might be getting a bit distracted by the log & the other elements of my post.

I did manage to figured out what caused the issue & you are right it was to do with a forward rule that was set up in kerio along with a rule in apple mail & an issue with the out of office they all played a part in the issue.

The real thing I was trying to figure out was is there a way to limit the number of emails being sent out by a users mailbox per day.
So instead of running into the above loop again it would be some what curtailed when the user hit a limit of sent email eg 250 in the day instead of no limit & it spiraling out of controle.

The only thing that managed to slow down the issue this time was that the users mailboxes had a limit of 2GB which was hit after 10-15K of emails Smile

The first post was just a history of what had happend apologies for any confusion it might have caused

Thanks a million

Was wondering if there is any solution to the above? Limiting the number of emails sent per mailbox per day / hour

"Max number of messages per hour from one IP address" is the closest thing.

Hi MacLab

Thanks for the suggestion however is does this not limit the number of messages from an external ip address only?

Thanks a million

I don't think it would be limited to external. It would be whatever IP it sees making the SMTP connection.

You could also create a spam rule that rejects subject "Fwd: Fwd: Fwd:" although again, this is not as good as what you are looking for. But it might do the trick.

Hi All

I was wondering if the ability to limit the number of emails sent per user has been added to the new Kerio 8.1 update or if anyone has found a solution?
