Create a new traffic policy, put in on top.
source->Any, ip, users.. (the users you are blocking msn)
Destination->"Internet"
Service->Windows Messenger
Action->drop

Yahoo Messenger can change the port that it uses to connect, so you can't block it by using a traffic policy. Try blocking the login URL instead...

For MSN Messenger, if I don't include it in traffic policy, it won't work since the default traffic policy is to block all traffic.

MSN 6 still goes out. It automatically goes out through port HTTP.

You can block MSN by host if you have having everybody using DNS
at the server. Just plop this entry in your hosts file
127.0.0.1 messenger.hotmail.com

If that entry doesn't work I am going to have to check a client's
host file for the correct hostname.

This was the way we block ICQ, AOL, YAHOO and MSN.

I hope this helps you out.

I have used these rules for blocking MSN and Yahoo Messenger in HTTP Policy..

MSN Messenger : *messenger.hotmail.com/*
Yahoo Messenger : *messenger.yahoo.com/*
Yahoo Messenger URL2 : *msg.yahoo.com/*
Block MSN Web Messenger : *webmessenger.msn.com/*

It works for me..

Yap, that worked for me. I created a group of users who are not allowed to use MSN and applied that URL rule.

I agree, it also works for me.

I tried to experiment to limit the user who can access any messenger service so i added a rule in http policy.
