I have been getting random reports to severe echo from my users. I have narrowed down the echo mostly occurs when talking with someone outside our phone network. The echo occurs very randomly. I am receiving the following errors in the kernel log. When I get a report about echo I usually notice there are more errors in the kernel log but have not been able to pin point a call with echo to an entry in the log.

We are using a Digium TE122 PRI card with our full Pri Circuit. We switched to Operator from a Cisco system and didn't have an issue with echo but our gateway had a hardware echo canceller. Is there something on Operator I can change to help with the echo or do I need to start talking with my PRI provider?

Thanks,

Scott

FWIW, I get some of those errors also (not as many as you), but my users have not complained of any echo.

Have you tried dialling 81 (echo test) to get a sense of the latency between the problem phone(s) and the server?

The echo test is fine. This happens with phones that are even on the same LAN as the Operator server. This only happens with calls going over PRI.

Thanks,

Hi,

This is not an error, it's just a notification from the low-level DAHDI driver. It switches off the echo canceler when it detects a fax transmission.

We will see if it is possible to redirect this message somewhere else than the error log in a future version.

We will also check if the canceler is switched back on after the fax is sent. If it is not enabled after the transmission, it's an error that needs to be fixed.

Okay that makes sense. How would you suggest I go about tracking down the source of my echo?

Thanks,

What you can do is to confirm that you get the echo on the channel after receiving/sending a fax.

I you hear an echo, it's usually produced by the other party. A typical echo source is a phone that has an analog last mile connection where the impedance is not OK.

Do you have fax detection enabled on some of your extensions? Try to disable it.

These messages appear when Asterisk detects a CED tone (2100Hz) on a channel. It turns the echo canceler off for the rest of the call so that faxes work. It is possible that the detection malfunctions and some noise gets detected as a CED signal.

When the software echo canceler is off, you are likely to hear the echo. I believe I read somewhere that it can be fixed by using a hw echo canceler or by turning off any fax detection.

So just so I understand...when a fax tone is detected the software echo canceller is disabled. When it is disabled is echo cancelling disabled for all extensions or just that extension the tone was detected on?

Also I have just purchased the hardware echo canceller card for me TE-122 PRI card. Is there anything special I need to do for Operator to use it instead of software canceller?

Thanks,

Scott

It is disabled only for the active channel (call).

Regarding the echo canceler, all you have to do is to plug it in.

Not sure if this is still a problem for you or not, but sometimes audio issues (i.e. loud echo, R2D2, etc) can be caused by not having proper QoS configured on your network switches and/or routers. This may not always be the cause, but it can be a contributing factor. In my experience, I've found that by prioritizing the VoIP packets over all the rest, these and a lot of other seemingly "random" peculiarities just disappear.
