Our company will double the amount off accounts from 550 to 1100, and all with multiple email clients (imaps/activesync/offline connector).
We use the latest release of kerio(8.1.3) on an ubuntu release (12.04) 12GB internal memory with a EMC SAN setup in a vm environment.

If we count the max open files for the mail server process, we have in a very busy day around the 2400 open files/connections.
(a mix of imap(s) / http(s) with mostly AppleMail imap and iPhone/iPad exchange accounts and some web users.)

We will get another 500 extra windows users (kerio offline connector, and mobile phones) and we expect to double the open files/connections for the kerio process.

Kerio is now started with the $ulimit -n 4096, so max 4096 open files/connections. We will increase this to the 8192 amount, otherwise we expect a problem!

Question: experience of company's with this many accounts/connections ? Or people who change the ulimits on their server. We looked at the distributed domain setup, but was not a solution because off the limitations.

Kerio Connect 8.1.3 build 1711
System: Ubuntu 12.04, x86_64
Current system limits: 4096 opened files, 2.00 MB stack size

example with 550 account: $# lsof -Pn -c mailserve | wc -l
