We have been getting a large number of complaints after upgrading to KMS 6, because there is no browser version for Mac OS 9 and below that works with the new webmail system. Many of our users at home are still using these machines. Argh.

The solution? Yesterday, I installed PHP and Squirrelmail 1.4.x on a Windows server. With a few configuration tweaks and limited testing, it seems to work just fine with KMS. For IMAP server type, you'll want to select "other". You'll also want to change the default folders for Trash, Drafts, Sent, etc, so that they use the same mailboxes whether they're using squirrelmail, kms webmail, or an imap client.

You will probably want to have a rudimentary technical understanding of PHP and IMAP before undergoing this task. But that said, it's not too hard to get up and working with a quick RTFMing.

I will report here if I find any major bugs, showstoppers, or workarounds.
