If you save password as SHA you cannot use: CRAM-MD5, DIGEST-MD5, NTLM.

So remains Plain or Login. What is "Login" exactly? Also what type of SHA is it?

PLAIN is SASL authentication method (http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc4616), LOGIN is a similar authentication command in IMAP (http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc3501#section-6.2.3).

SHA is SHA-1.

Thank you Pavel. Not using imap but login and plain are both insecure anyway

Does password storage come with salting?

If you don't save in SHA, how does it store?

Yes, SHA-1 is salted. The other option is Triple-DES.

3DES for storage of passwords? Just how good is it compared to SHA1?
