Currently we are setting up the chat functionality of Kerio. I can connect fine on port 5222 with encryption in the client enabled but I cannot connect to the secure instant messaging port 5223.

The port is open in the firewall config and responds to telnet but it closes the connection instantly.

In the debug log I see this:

[25/Nov/2013 13:58:14][23822] {im} [external] Registered new client socket: java.nio.channels.SocketChannel[connected local=/**.**.**.**:5223 remote=/xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:48111] (ConnectionOpenThread.run)

What other steps can I do to get things running.

Port 5223 use only SSL and you can't use telnet to check the connection. SSL ports can be checked with openssl:
openssl s_client -connect mail.company.com:5223

Also port 5223 is mostly for legacy XMMP clients which does not support STARTTLS. All new clients should use only port 5222 with STARTTLS.
