I read on http://cdn2.kerio.com/kerio-connect-adminguide-en-8.2.4-2550.pdf that kerio-connect must be installed with root rights.

What are the reason why kerio-connect must run under root (ports < 1000)?

Is it possible to run the kerio-connect server as a non root user on linux (debian) ?

No, Kerio Connect is designed to run under root account. Port binding is one of the reasons.
