A customer of ours is sending emails from an Exchange server.

One of our users (using Connect Client) complained that some of those emails either showed none of the multiple attachments, or showed only a winmail.dat attached.

The error logs showed this error for each of those emails:

mail_queue.cpp: TNEF decoding of message /Volumes/mailraid_1-7/mailserver/store/queue/12/555ce8a9-001 5710a.eml failed: Invalid MAPI property type

We noted that the same email opened with other users' accounts correctly.

Using the affected user's computer, I logged into the admin account and opened the email in question from the archive. It opened correctly with all attachments displayed. So, I expect the problem is within this user's account on the Kerio server.

A re-index reported no problems. Before I call in one of my support allotments, does anyone have any suggestions?

Many thanks,
Lyle

Hello Lyle,

Please upgrade your Kerio Connect to version 8.5 - There has been some improvements within the TNEF Decoder that probably will fix that.

All the best,

Jonas

Thanks Jonas!
I'm curious how this would affect only the one user's account.
Either way, I'll upgrade as soon as 8.5.1 is released. I try to avoid the X.X.0 releases.

Regards,
Lyle

We've been having this problem pretty frequently across multiple users. We were running 8.3.1 for a solid six months and would see this error maybe every other month, but since we've upgraded to 8.3.3 we've seen it daily. We're currently running 8.4.1 and it hasn't let up.

Jonas,
My question about 8.5.0 is that I've looked through release notes for it and I don't see anything relating to improvements on the TNEF Decoder. Why is that? A big red flag goes up in my mind when you say the latest version will probably fix it, but it isn't listed in the release notes.

I have the same strategy as Lyle, and we don't typically upgrade to a newer version of software until it has cooked for a month or two after release. I am not eager to fix one problem with newer software and possibly implement newer problems.
Thanks for the help and discussion guys.

Best Regards,
Dan

The full list of changes in 8.5.0 version has more than 860 items so we choose only important ones for publishing in changelog on web. Support for recent Tnef format used by Outlook.com is in Kerio Connect 8.5.0.

Thank you for confirming Pavel. We will weigh the importance of upgrading sooner rather than later based on our users.
