Looking at the couple of the spam that slipped through our Spam Assassin and custom rules this morning. They were coming from some of the new top level domain extensions available. in this case, .work and .xyz. I decided to find the list of new available extensions online to see what others I would most likely end up blocking. Ones such as .diet, .exposed, .sex, .sexy, .singles, .tattoo, .webcam, and some others.

This got me to wondering which is more efficient in Connect. Does entering in a Custom Rule for each of those extensions have a bigger drain on the server versus creating a single custom SA rule that looks for these extensions and adds a large score.

Any one know the answer which is better? They both have the same ending effect.

I would like to hear the answer too, out custom rule list has gotten rather large and at times we think it is affecting server load. Unfortunately this is a large production server so testing on it is out of the question.

Maybe a Kerio tech knows the answer or has some info on this?

Hi Mark,

Having a large list of custom rules can put a little strain on the server but that list would have to have a lot of rules like hundreds or thousands. If you are confident with editing the spam assassin rules I would suggest doing it there. Just take a copy of the file before you edit it so it can be reverted back in case your changes cause any problems.

I hope this helps,
Vicky
