Hi,

we are having some big problems with EWS (Outlook 2016 on OS X 10.12.x) and also the Kerio Connect Webmail within Safari.
Both Services are using https in the background, so eventually there is a common issue?

When login in into the webmail we get the spinning wheel for up to 5 minutes.
Once the user is logged in we get the message "Server error Server not responding.." or "Server error failed to load folders. Try to log in again"
If the webmail itself is not giving us any errors it takes really long until a mail can be opened or within the calendar it takes some minutes until all items of the selected week or month are shown.
With EWS Outlook is real slow when receiving emails but when sending them or accepting meeting invites(that is nothing else then a mail that gets sent out) it takes minutes or hours! until the mail is sent. Sometime the mail does not get sent and instead we get a error message in Outlook.

> An opereation on the server timed out. The server may be down, overloaded, or there may be to much net traffic.
> Error Code -1001

And also in the osx console we get a reoccuring error:
> Microsoft Outlook: Stream xxxxxxxxx is sending an event before being opened

while EWS and Webmail having problems IMAP and SMTP seemed to be working fine.
CPU load was at about 20% at the test time
MEM was at 5GB used (8 available)
Storage still over 1TB free, attached by thunderbolt
io/s on the storage was at about 1.7 MB/s when we tested
EWS/HTTPS are slow over WAN access and also over LAN access

System:
OS: OS X 10.11.5
Kerio: 9.2.1
CPU: Intel Core i7 Quad Core <_at_>2.0 GHz
MEM: 8GB
System Drive: 256 GB SSD
Kerio Storage: Promise RAID

One user that had the problem has a real huge mailbox. about 40 GB with over 400k items half of them are calendar events..
Might this be the key problem?
Any recommendations about the max mailbox size for kerio?

Thank you in advance

How many users?

Which Promise model are you using for the mailstore, and what RAID level is it formatted in presently?

Gotcha. RAID 5 and 6 are reltively poor choices (read slooow) for a mailstore.

Many, including myself, recommend RAID 10 for both speed and safety.

While not a super easy operation, I would consider backing that up (clone) to another volume, reformat into RAID10 (use one of the pre-defined optimization levels for mail server in the promise configuration wizard), and restore the data back. It could also be related to your defined block size, etc.

And with that said, 17 users isn't very many.

Do your users have more than 10k items in anyone one mailbox?... especially the inbox. This begins to drag the system down.

Thank you!

Most of them got more than 10k items.
Top user is at about 400K! items mails and calendar items. and we already archived about 250k...
So I guess it is not a problem by the max data throughput (in the test it was at only 1.7 MB/s) but more a problem related to file open/close at the same time?

SO I guess it would also not be recommended to migrate the Kerio with that much items to a virtual machine? Shared storage in this VM Environment is also RAID 6. so better getting a RAID 10 for the mailstore?

Regards

Correct. Reduce to max 10k items *per folder*.

See if that helps (bet you it does).

It won't tremendously help to migrate to another seemingly equivalent host at this point.

If still no goood, then next step is RAID10.

ok. thanks. we keep that in mind. reducing the mailbox size is something we want to do since a long, long time. also due to the fact Kerio says there should not be more then 10k items per folder, by what they told us in a different case
but one thing hat I 'm unsure about that it might help is the is the fact that the IMAP/SMTP connection on the same client machine to the same Kerio account works fine without the big delay. CalDAV also has a big delay (OS X Calendar App).
Are eventually the https services the bottleneck?
We tried increasing the max simoultaneous connections to 1.5k but without success.
