We went through similar problems when there was a 10BaseT hub involved in our network through which data was going to the server. A file could be copied directly to the server (W2KS) through the hub in a matter of seconds. The same file sent to the server as an email attachment could take several minutes to go through. What kept us guessing was that only Outlook Express and Internet Explorer (webmail) on Windows 2000 and XP platforms seemed affected. Both of these on Windows 98 worked fast. Thunderbird and Firefox on all platforms were fast.

Other mail server software we demoed didnt show this problem. Changing the hub to a cheap 100BaseT switch made the problem go away. Very bizarre...

If you're not using a hub, I dont know.
