Hi all

Can the SA rule (spamassissin\rules\*.cf) files be updated with the latest from the web?

Some of them are quite old (2004).

I am using KMS 6.1 on Win2003 SP1 Server.

It would be cool if that could be done, because waiting for a new KMS version just to update the rules doesn't make sense for me.

Thanks, Pascal

Yes, they can, just add any .cf files you have to the rules sub-directory. You can even add other third-party or your own .cf files and they will be used by KMS.

Look into the SARE project (SpamAssassin Rules Emporium) if you don't already know about it.

Thanks, jshaw541, for that.

I see the 25-uribl.cf, which should check for spam urls in the mail body. But this never gets triggered. Is it used by KMS?

Thanks, Pascal

If it's in the rules subdirectory, KMS should recognize it and utilize the rules, assuming they are sane.

If you're testing rules, make sure you send the test messages from addresses which aren't whitelisted in any manner.

I've used SARE rules with KMS and they worked fine. I now use a postfix/amavisd email gateway (because KMS lacks some basic spam fighting features). With the gateway, I use SARE and RulesDuJour with amavisd. RulesDuJour is pretty flakey, I don't really like it. YMMV

Martin:

Yes, you have to restart KMS any time you add or make changes to the CF files in the rules directory.

I downloaded 4 of the rulesets from the SARE site.
Placed the files into the kerio\plugins\spamassassin\rules folder with the others.
Restarted the mail server. Have even rebooted the server machine since then.
I logged into a yahoo mail account and sent an email with the word ROLEX in the subject.
From what I can tell of the rule file, it's searching for that word in the body of the email.
The message was not blocked as spam.

Can someone help me properly test that adding these rules into the folder is working correctly?
I know this isn't supported by Kerio so I won't bother them with it. I don't want to edit any of my own rules, simply want to place the new rules files in there and make sure they are working.

You should check in the header of the mail if the ruleset gets triggered. Your mail won't be considered as spam just because you have the word Rolex in it. This just adds something to the spam score.

Regards, Pascal

Where's the equivalent folder on Mac OS X? I'm guessing that it's
/usr/local/kerio/mailserver/store/spamassassin/rules/ but can anyone confirm this?

Thanks.

Cheers,
Jon

Yes, that looks to be the right place (assuming /usr/local is where KMS is installed on that box.)
