Hey all,

I'm trying to set up some SPAM rules in the filter settings. A lot of the rules I try to add will look for common words in the subject line, then add to the score based on that. However, I'm noticing that the filter doesn't seem to work if I add more than 1 word in the content section of the rule. Is this correct? Does this mean I'll need to set up rules for every possible spelling of a word (viagra,v1agra,vi<_at_>gra) to get this to work properly?

Also, does the filter lower the total score if the sender's domain is set up as a domain on the server? In my case, we're in the process of moving over to KMS. For testing and to get people comfortable with it, I have some rules set up in our old mail product (Groupwise) to forward all messages to this new server. As a result, all mail coming in shows as being from a user on the primary domain. Does this effect the SPAM score? I ask because there is a lot of junk still coming in, but I hesitate to start marking it all as SPAM, as it all shows up from the same user for now.

Doesn't the built in Spam Assasin already do this?

It appears to be trying to, but it's not working very well. I don't know if it's because we're forwarding messages on from our existing mail server, or if something else isn't working right. Some of the headers of messages that are clearly SPAM have looked like this:

X-Spam-Status: No, hits=0.0 required=5.0
	tests=ALL_TRUSTED: -2.4,AWL: -1.508,HTML_40_50: 0.527,
	HTML_IMAGE_ONLY_08: 2.881,HTML_MESSAGE: 0.001

X-Spam-Status: No, hits=0.0 required=5.0
	tests=ALL_TRUSTED: -2.4,AWL: -1.730,DRUGS_ERECTILE: 1.25,
	SUBJECT_DRUG_GAP_VIA: 2.659

So, I'm not sure why these things aren't getting tagged properly, or how I can configure the ALL_TRUSTED and AWL rules, as they seem to be applied to all messages and are removing a lot of points.

I should add that the only way I've been able to get a message tagged as SPAM is if I add a very specific rule looking for just 1 word in the subject. If I try to add multiple words, comma separated, and then try to send a message with 1 or more of the words in the subject line, it doesnt' pick up on anything. That's why I was asking about having to add a rule for each spelling of a word before.

Did you try to setting 'Enable scanning of messages sent from trusted relay agents defined in SMTP relay option' on the Spam Rating tab? That might do the trick, but if I'm not mistaken, it will also scan messages sent from your users.

Yup, that option is checked. And it appears to be working, as it does scan. And if I set a rule specifically looking for 1 word in the subject, it will pick it up and mark the message as SPAM. It's just not doing for normal messages that are getting forwarded on from our old server.
