Setup is windows 2000 server sp4 with dual lan cards
Running Winroute Firewall 6.2.0 build 1323(30 day trial)
first lan card is cable connection to internet 203.97.xx.xx
second lan card is connected to Gigabit switch 192.168.0.20
clients are all in 192.168.0.x subnet
Mail server is internet based 203.110.28.38
Have got traffic rules set for pop&smtp access
Mail client is Outlook express 6
When checking email on any Lan pc gets the first message from the mail server then gives this error.
"Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity. Account: 'mail.xxxx.co.nz', Server: 'mail.xxxx.co.nz', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '+OK 26147 octets', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F"

Any help would be appreciated.

As Kerio_pedobry states in his post, try lowering your MTU settings on all workstations.

In this case is probably problem with POP3 protocol inspector. Try to disable POP3 inspector in Configuration->Definitions->Services->POP3->Add(Edit) set Protokol inspection to none. This may help you. But note, this will disable antvivirus checking of POP3 protocol.

Thanks for the help guys it was my mistake i had turned the protocol inspector off for only one of the 2 rules i was using once i realised and turned it off for both rules it worked fine. Very unusual result considering it is just standard pop3 traffic that i would assume should pass the inspector.

Thanks for the suggestion but for the work around i had used windows internet connection sharing which worked fine so i never could see any reason in changing the mtu value when the system worked fine with other software.
