Hi,

sorry if this question has been asked before:

We've got aroung 220-240 Users connecting to KMS6.13 on a 10.4 Mac Server.

The users are scientists and don't really grasp the fact that leaving their workstations on for weeks on end and setting their mailclient to poll the mailserver 20 times a minute can pose a problem. This is no joke, one department had all of their 30 or so clients pop3 polling set to 5 seconds.
At the moment we have one user with an active imap connection duration of 245 hours who has beem polling his imap account every minute.

So, what I would like to do is restrict pop3 polling to once a minute, more frequent polling would lead to the blocking of that IP for 5 to 10 minutes or so and something simillar for the imap users who just keep sessions open for weeks.

Normally I couldn't care less but last week one mailclient (Thunderbird running on a windows box) went haywire after the user had it running nonstop for 2 months and started opening connections until the mailserver hit our concurrent connections limit.
Anybody got any ideas on how to do restrict something like that??

Cheers
ron

To my knowledge, it's not possible. But...

That sounds more like a network security problem than a mail problem. Users should be forced to log off when they leave for security reasons, as well as to free up network resources while they are not using them. Someone logged in for 2 months straight is a definite problem. If you could address that issue, the mail issue would be solved since the mail clients would be forced to shut down when a user logs off.

Education!

Hold a class. Have a quiz at the end. Explain (with numbers, charats and diagrams) why the 5 second poll time is bad.

If these people are scientists, they'll a) understand your logic and b) soak up all the info - they're used to years of schooling.

Hi,

I tried talking to the head of that department, he doesn't want to restricht "free thinking" whatever that might mean.

As for talking to the perp's directly:
well, some of these people's mind is not in the same spacetime as the rest of their body (or the rest of us for that matter!) ;-))

I'll probably make a custom rule in the intrusion prevention system, something like:

Imap connection > 200hours then block for 1 week

;-))

Cheers
