Hello everyone,

Has we are having some trouble getting SQL 2005 Database Mail to work with our Kerio MAIL SMTP server. Kerio is the latest 6.2.2 build on a Windows 2000 server with all Microsoft updates. SQL 2005 is installed on another server running Windows Server 2003 with all available patches and updates. When we setup the Database Mail in SQL 2005 the test never works, we constantly get the following message:

Message
The mail could not be sent to the recipients because of the mail server failure. (Sending Mail using Account 4 (2006-09-06T11:42:17). Exception Message: Cannot send mails to mail server. (Failure sending mail.).

Anyone have any thoughts?

Enable STMP Server debug logging in the debug log. Go to the debug log, right click in the right window and go to Messages. This will show you the entire SMTP conversation for the connecting client.

Ok, here is what came up, note that 192.168.2.6 is the SQL 2005 server, out main Kerio server is at 192.168.2.1 - this looks strange, certainly looks like something in SQL...

[06/Sep/2006 12:12:00][1860] {smtps} SMTP server session begin; client connected from 192.168.2.6:2161

Yeah, that line indicates that the SQL engine did something strange. Are you able to configure what authentication method the SQL server uses?

Well I had it on Basic Authentication in SQL, with the correct email account username and password setup, I tried anonymous and Windows Authentication using Database Credentials with no luck.

FYI something else I should add to all of this, we have 2 different SQL 2005 Standard edition servers, both on Windows Server 2003, one is SP1 and one is R2 and both have the same exact issue with trying to get database mail working, which means it is probably something we did not set correctly but trying to figure out what it is has not been easy so far.

Well thanks everyone - it wouldn't work before but now it it working fine on anonymous authentication - which is fine for us since they are all internal emails for this anyway. Thanks again everyone!
